YOUTH SERVICES

ABOUT OUR youth services

The fifth of Rotary’s Five Avenues of Service is Youth Service, an initiative that  “recognizes the positive change by youth and young adults via leadership and involvement.” Presently, the Monteagle-Sewanee Rotary Club has initiated two youth service organizations that involve students in Rotary style clubs. The first is Rotaract, and the second is Interact.

ROTARACT/INTERACT

What is Rotaract? From the Rotary International Handbook for Rotaract:  “Rotaract is a service club for young people ages 18 to 30 who are dedicated to finding innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges while developing leadership skills and making friends from around the world. Rotaract clubs decide how to organize and run their own clubs, manage their funds, and plan and carry out activities and service projects that are important to their communities. Rotary clubs that sponsor Rotaract clubs offer guidance and support and work with Rotaractors as partners in service.”

What is Interact? From the Rotary International Handbook for Interact: “Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people. Made up of members ages 14-18 or secondary-school age, Interact gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects. Along the way, Interactors develop their leadership skills and initiative while meeting new friends. Interactors have access to the many resources of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation of RI. Rotary International provides the administrative support that helps Interact clubs thrive.”

The University of the South Rotaract Club

The Monteagle-Sewanee Rotary Club sponsors the The University of the South Rotaract Club. The club is made up of approximately 30-40 young women and men, all of which are students from the college. . Rotaract serves as a vehicle as a preparation for the challenges of adulthood. In creating a fundraiser, Rotaract members must be able to organize, make contacts, and manage finances. An example of one of Rotoract’s more successful fundraisers is the Relay For Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society. They have managed to raise $40,000 or more in successive years.

The St. Andrews Sewanee Interact Club

The St. Andrews Sewanee (SAS) Interact Club is the Interact club sponsored by the Monteagle-Sewanee rotary Club. SAS is a small boarding and day school located between Monteagle and Sewanee. The SAS Interact Club has executed several innovative and successful projects such as raising money for hurricane relief.

Our Work with

SEWANEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND MONTEAGLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

We support  local elementary schools both by volunteering  and by providing monetary aid. Examples of each include the recent efforts of Rotary members to teach reading skills at Sewanee Elementary and  the distribution of dictionaries to third graders at Monteagle Elementary School.
